the 123rd foor of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa), mr. p and i headed for a bit of epicurean adventuring in singapore. While the street food hawking setting is as exciting as the range of delectable tasties ofered is enticing (think anything from satay to southern indian vegetarian to Japanese ramen to fried seafood) the concept of mildly spicy is akin to burn-the-roof-of-your-mouth hot. however, on the plus side, i made a pleasing discovery about the power that pitchers of tiger Beer has on cooling singed taste buds. B y the time we reached New ZealaNd, i balanced pangs of pride and shame over my transition from fashion stylist to biker chick. i actually got excited about the vintage two-wheeler collection at shed five, a cafe/motorcycle shop combo. to be fair, the shop also stocks some great designer tees. and, mr. p found himself a hugo Boss suit for less than 40 new Zealand dollars at one of the many vintage and "recycled'' shops. We also took great delight in sampling their delightfully bubbly lindauer sparkling wine. We eventually made our way from north island to north hollywood, where mr. p and i found ourselves hiding jet-lagged eyes behind some seriously dark glasses and sipping rich and aromatic California grape at another gastro hang out. one of the great things about being in la is that my poor bum got a rest from the Beast. yes, we temporarily switched to a Chrysler convertible, and i felt like my life was a permanently glamorous route 66-style american dream. oh and the fact that the car had much more room for all my shopping didn't hurt. Whizzing down melrose and through downtown la, we indulged in macaroons and portobello chips at a hip italian eatery. the fnal stop on this la adventure was the rooftop bar at the standard, where my garbo by greta jacket and i mingled with the beautiful hollywood crowd sipping Blue lagoon cocktails. good night, California. Lupe Castro taking a break to check out the breathtaking views along her journey. Off tO cOsta rica and back on the Beast, but the poor hunk of BmW had a mental breakdown. he had been such a big strong macho man up until now carrying us and our preciously packed panniers of fashionable travel-ware everywhere so smoothly and safely. he started whining and whirring as we arrived into atenas and had to stop for some rest and recuperation. at last, we made it to panama, where the Beast settled in for a fve-month hibernation. i took stock of how my usual hunt for the perfect handbag had morphed into an eternal quest for the best biking gear and most efcient mosquito repellent. Coco Chanel once cautioned women to dress each day as though "she has a date with destiny.'' Clearly, she did not travel by motorcycle. FAIRWEATHER | SUMMER 2013 | 45
